TOELICHTING - Dance-suite opus 160 - 2015-2016 - Marc van Delft

Lange tijd liep Marc van Delft rond met het idee om eens een werk te componeren dat in een opwindende folkloristische Dans- of balletmuziekstijl zou zijn, zoals bv. Petrouchka van Strawinsky en vooral de danssuite 'Estancia' van de Argentijnse componist Ginastera, een van zijn lievelingswerken.

Vanuit dit idee is Dance-suite ontstaan.

Het gehele werk bestaat uit 3 delen:

1/ snel [6 a 7 min] – Dance
2/ langzaam [5 min] – Intermezzo (Interlude)
3/ snel [12 min] - Finale [+ reels...]

Totale tijdsduur: ca. 24  minuten

Een belangrijke rol is in dit werk weggelegd voor de hoorns en de pauken.

De grote vorm heeft geen suite-karakter, maar de snelle afwisseling van korte thema’s zoals in deel 1 heeft wel een suite-achtig karakter.

Deel 1- Dans 

Het opwindende 1e deel bevat een aantal thema’s / motieven die elkaar afwisselen.

Belangrijk is een thema met de nadruk op het hout in 6/8 of 12/8-maat, met begeleiding door wisseltonen in parallelle kwarten in de saxen in achtsten-beweging in 4/4 maat.

Daarnaast een aantal thema’s / motieven met de nadruk op het koper [vooral de hoorns!] met als hoofdthema het hemiolen-hoorn-thema in een 3/4-6/8-maat.

Er is ook een opwindend ‘tegenthema’ van parallelle kwarten-akkoorden.

De verschillende thema’s wisselen elkaar steeds af.

Eerst componeerde Marc dit stuk als pianostuk voor een concert met hedendaagse componisten.  Op dit concert had dit werk een groot succes.

Deel 2 – Intermezzo

Dit deel is een nadere uitwerking van het wisseltoon-motief, maar nu in spannende kleine secundes in plaats van grote secundes.

Het karakter is dreigend, een onderhuidse spanning….

   Het begint echter met een cadens in de solo-klarinet, een moment van verstilling na de razende achtbaan-ervaring van de uitbundige opwinding van het 1e deel.

   Na een korte maar hevige climax volgt een meer weemoedige epiloog in het hout, een soort beschouwend koraal, wat een meer lyrisch karakter heeft wat op een meer open, vragende, afwachtende wijze afsluit.

Het langzame deel heeft meer het karakter van een intermezzo, een dreigende stilte voor de storm die in de finale zal losbarsten.

Deel 3 – Finale & reel

In de weerbarstige finale wordt min of meer voortgeborduurd op materiaal uit het 1e deel, maar het heeft een meer ernstig en grimmig karakter als het 1e deel.

     Ook verschijnen er nieuwe thema’s: bv. een dramatische 6/8-ff-tutti-passage in parallelle kwinten in de octotonische toonladder, met chromatische loopjes van het hout die erdoorheen bewegen, met achtsten-getrommel van de tomtoms.

Na een climax volgt als totale verassing een volkomen ander en nieuw gedeelte wat niet op Zuid-Amerikaanse maar op Keltische muziek is geïnspireerd, met de nadruk op het hout; -eerst met een doedelzak-imitatie door de hobo's en de trombone als pedaaltoon, en dan een vrolijk en snel gedeelte, een Iers-schotse volksdans – een ‘reel’ in hele snelle 16-en beweging in 4/4-maat, met trommels en handenklappen met bourdontonen in de bas.

Daarna volgt weer een reprise van het muzikaal materiaal van het begin van de finale en herinneringen aan de motieven uit het 1e deel.

   Even leek het er op dat dit net zoals het eerste deel de slot-apotheose zou worden, maar opeens stort de muziek in en volgt er een herinnering aan de ingehouden dreigende sfeer van het intermezzo, waarna een snelle coda (met het beschreven nieuwe thema) naar de slotapotheose leidt.

Er is ook een versie [alternatief slot] gemaakt die net zo eindigt als het 1e deel, met de apotheose van het hoofdthema uit het 1e deel.

De succesvolle 1e uitvoering van de Dance-suite vond plaats op 20 juli 2017 in Vredenburg-Utrecht, tijdens de WASBE-conferentie, door st. Michael uit Thorn o.l.v. Ivan Meylemans.
Het 1e deel als apart werk is daarna ook nog 3x uitgevoerd, o.a. 2x in de VS door twee universiteitsorkesten.

For a long time, Marc walked around with the idea to compose a work that would have the character of an exciting folkloric Dance- or ballet music, like for example Petrouchka by Stravinsky and especially the dance suite "Estancia" of the Argentine composer Ginastera, one of his favourite works.

The Dance Suite is a development / realization of this idea.

An important role in this work is for the horns and the timpani.

The 3-part-form is not like a suite, but the rapid alternation of short themes such in Part 1 does have a suite-like character….

Part 1 – Dance

The exciting Part 1 contains a number of themes / motifs, alternating each other.

Important is a theme focusing on the woodwinds in 6/8 or 12/8, accompanied by alternating tones in parallel fourths in the saxes in eighths movements in 4/4.

In addition, there is a number of themes / motifs with emphasis on the brass [especially the horns!] with the main theme: the hemiole-horn theme in 3/4 - 6/8.

There is also an exciting 'counter-theme’ of parallel fourths chords.

The different themes change constantly together like in a suite or a rondo.

At first, Marc did compose the first part as a piano piece for a concert of contemporary composers.
At the concert, the piece had a great succes as piano piece!

Part 2 – Intermezzo / Interlude

This part is a further development of the alternating-tone motif, but now in minor seconds instead of major seconds.

The character is menacing, threatening, a repressed tension ....

    But it begins with a cadenza in the solo clarinet, a moment of silence after the frantic rollercoaster experience of the exuberant excitement of Part 1.

    After a brief but intense climax, a more melancholic epilogue follows in the woodwinds, a kind of reflective choral, which has a more lyrical character, closing on an open, questioning, cautious way.

The slow movement has the character of an intermezzo / interlude, a menacing, threatening silence before the storm that will break loose in the final part…

Part 3 – Finale & reel

The dramatic, grimly final part is more or less build on material from the 1st part, but it has a more serious and grim character as the 1st part.

     Also, there appear new themes: for example, a dramatic 6/8-ff-tutti passage in parallel fifths in the octotonic scale, with chromatic runs of the woodwind which pass through it, with eighths-drummings in the tom-toms.

After a climax, as a total surprise, there follows a completely different and new section which is not inspired on South American folklore music, but which is inspired by Celtic folk music, with an emphasis on the woodwinds;

- At first a bagpipe imitation by the oboes and the trombone as a pedal tone, and then a cheerful and quick section, an Irish-Scottish folk dance – called a "reel" in a very rapid 16th motion in 4/4, with drums and hand clapping and bourdon-tones in the bass.

       Then again there follows a reprise of the musical material of the beginning of the final part and memories of subjects from the 1st part.

   One moment, it appeared that, just as the first part, this would become the final apotheosis, but suddenly the music collapses and there is a memory of the threatening atmosphere of the interlude, where after a quick coda (with the new theme) leads to the final apotheosis.

There is also made a version [alternative closing] which ends like the 1st part, with the apotheosis of the main theme from Part 1.

The successful 1st performance of the Dance suite took place on July 20, 2017 in Vredenburg-Utrecht, during the WASBE conference, by st. Michael from Thorn, conducted by Ivan Meylemans.
The first part as separate work was then also performed 3x, including 2x in the USA by two university orchestras.
