Het koraal drukt de stilte, de donkerte, de vredigheid, de donkere winterstemming uit, de donkere dagen voor kerst die al donkerder en donkerder worden, en uit die absolute donkerte moet dan het geesteslicht worden geboren van het godskind...
De As-dur-drieklank / de toonsoort As dur staat voor de adventstijd, december, Es-dur voor de Kerststemming vanaf 21 december, midwinter, en dat zijn ook de eerste twee akkoorden van het stuk.
Het stuk eindigt in een berustend, diep nachtelijk / winters Es dur.
Ook gaat de muziek vaak naar het vragende G-dur-akkoord [=V, de Dominant-functie].
Dat is de verwachting voor het komende, de geboorte van het Godskind, en G dur is bij uitstek de kersttoonsoort van de herders, de kerst- en herdersliederen, het Stier-evangelie van Lucas, [G dur = ook de toonsoort van Taurus / Stier]...
