Programmatoelichting (Nederlands):
Het stuk “Van Republiek tot Koninkrijk” is gebaseerd op drie historische werken: de “Est-ce mars”, “Merck toch hoe Sterck” en het “Wilhelmus”. In “Van Republiek tot Koninkrijk” wordt het ontstaan van het Koninkrijk der Nederlanden verteld.
Het verhaal begint met het leven in de Republiek der Verenigde Nederlanden in de zeventiende en achttiende eeuw, met muziek die in die periode populair was.
Enkele jaren na de Franse Revolutie van 1789 nemen de Fransen de macht over in de Nederlanden. De Bataafse Republiek blijft redelijk zelfstandig, maar als uiteindelijk Napoleon zichzelf, in navolging van Karel de Grote, tot Keizer van Frankrijk kroont komt de Republiek steeds meer onder druk te staan. Als u goed luistert kunt u de oplopende spanning horen!
Uiteindelijk lijft Napoleon de Nederlanden bij het Franse Keizerrijk in maar wordt enige jaren later tijdens de veldtocht tegen de Russen verslagen. Napoleon wordt verbannen naar Elba en vervolgens hoort u de scheepsreis van de toekomstige koning naar Nederland, met zijn beroemde landing te Scheveningen en uiteindelijke kroning tot Koning Willem I: het Koninkrijk der Nederlanden is geboren!

Program Notes (English):
This composition tells the story of the birth of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
Three historic melodies, popular in earlier times, form the musical foundation of this piece: “Est-ce mars”, “Merck toch hoe Sterck” (a Dutch patriotic song) and the Dutch national anthem: “Wilhelmus”.
During the Dutch War of Independence (1568-1648), the foundation of the Netherlands was laid in the form of the “Republic of the Seven United Netherlands”.
The arts, science and trade flourished, but went into decline after this Golden Age, and the Netherlands were eventually annexed by the French Empire in the early 19th century.
After the defeat of Napoleon Bonaparte, the music expresses the journey of the future King William I, traveling by ship from England to Scheveningen, where his landing and subsequent coronation symbolise the birth of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
